Biography

Glenn S. Daehn is the Mars G. Fontana Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at The Ohio State University where he has been a professor since 1988. He earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University and B.S. from Northwestern University in materials science and engineering. 

Professor Daehn’s research, education and service efforts are all broadly related to the interwoven themes of Midwestern manufacturing revival, through technology development, education, and integration of the University mission. His research is focused on novel materials processing with a particular focus on plastic deformation and impulse-based processes. He has been active in the professional development of K-12 teachers through the ASM Materials Education Foundation and its Materials Camps programs. Daehn has also been instrumental in founding several technical outreach organizations including the Ohio Manufacturing Institute, the LIFT Manufacturing USA Institute, Ohio State’s Center for Design and Manufacturing ExcellenceInternational Impulse Forming Group, and NSF's Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution (HAMMER)

Teaching and Professional Development

Glenn is passionate about connecting kids in the K-12 pipeline to careers in the STEM fields (at all levels, not just professional engineers).

Since 2007, he has been very involved in the ASM Materials Camp for Teachers program and has been a trustee on the ASM Education Foundation Board since 2010. 

Since 2012, he has been involved in the professional development of practicing high school science teachers through the Math Science Partnership Program. Some of the concepts that are being delivered to teachers can be found at this teacher’s professional development site

Manufacturing

Glenn has been involved in a range of activities that encourage deep interaction between academia and industry.  

He was the founder and is the current Director of the Ohio Manufacturing Institute.  

He is part of Ohio State's leadership team for the Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow Institute, founded by EWI, University of Michigan and Ohio State. He led the Agile Manufacturing and Low Cost Tooling pillar in the first five years of the program.  

He also plays central roles in Ohio State’s manufacturing initiatives including being part of the team that initiated the Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence and led the Materials and Manufacturing for Sustainability Discovery Theme Initiative, which invested in faculty and facilities around manufacturing and materials.

Daehn served on the Executive Committee of MForesight, a manufacturing think-and-do tank over the duration of that award from NSF and NIST. He is the PI of NSF's Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution (HAMMER), whose purpose is to advance national goals to assert American leadership in advanced manufacturing by developing and transitioning new manufacturing technologies to industry use, driving new technical education and credentialing that will prepare, upskill, or reskill the workforce, and expand capabilities across the manufacturing supply chain to meet national needs.

Dr. Daehn is the chief scientific officer for HAMICo, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity that aligns interests of industry, academics, federal agencies and other community stakeholders on projects, incubates intellectual property and standards, develops minimum viable products and produces prototypes.

Expertise

Professor Daehn's research is focused on novel materials processing with a particular focus on plastic deformation and impulse-based processes.

He is particularly interested in unconventional processing routes for high strength-lightweight materials and assemblies and has been involved in impulse manufacturing for 30 years. This technology allows new ways of shaping, cutting, joining, and processing materials.
