Meet Ethan Terry, third-year materials science and engineering major and undergraduate research assistant at the Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME). From a very young age, Terry has had a deep fascination for robots, specifically robots used in the mass-production of automobiles, which led him to pursue both a major in engineering and a position with CDME.

Through his involvement with the center and collaboration with CDME Lead Engineer Jacob Rindler, Terry has been able to work on projects involving car aluminum printing, DED printing, and joining technologies for additive manufacturing.

Recently, Terry has had the opportunity to work on a project for America Makes, which has taken the form of an examination in defects developed during laser powder bed fusion. Terry's contributions to the project have included assistance in collecting metallographic data, examining and measuring melt tracks, and developing an analysis method and procedure for tensile testing of additive manufacturing materials.

America Makes is the national accelerator for additive manufacturing and 3D printing. The organization is the nation's leading and collaborative partner in additive manufacturing and 3D printing technology research, discovery, creation, and innovation. Aside from his involvement with the America Makes project, Terry’s day-to-day responsibilities at CDME range from sample preparation to mechanical and hardness testing.

Terry has been able to directly apply the skills and experiences he gained from working at CDME to a manufacturing internship with Honda this past summer. He looks forward to taking what he’s learned to the workforce following his graduation in May 2022.
